As a chiropractor, I understand that the spine is not just a structure of bones, but an overall component of our health.  But why is the spine so important? I mean think about it, why are there so many branches of the healthcare field dedicated to it? There are so many reasons why, but for now let's explore just three importances of the spine: structure, movement and protection.

Structure

For one the spine is a pillar of our body.  It provides the support and stability that allows us to move and stand.  When our spine is not properly aligned is when our posture changes, and then starts to cause different musculoskeletal issues and discomfort.

Protecting our Nervous System

Did you know that the spine protects the spinal cord?  The spinal cord is a crucial part of our nervous system, and the spinal cord is what connects the brain to the rest of the body.  If there is a injury to our spine, this can interfere with the communication that comes from our spinal cord and brain to our organs and tissues.  In fact, this is often when we see symptoms like pain or numbness.

Movement

When we think of bones we think of a solid object.  However most joints and bones allow for movement.  This does not exclude the spine.  In fact, each segment of the spine from the neck to the low back has a very specific amount of movement that contributes to all our activities.

Now you can see how the spine plays a role in our health.  The spine is more than just a stack of bones. It is the foundation of movement, structure and protection of our nervous system.  As a chiropractor, I know the importance of investing in your body's abiity to function at its best, by prioritizing your spinal health.
