Headaches and Chiropractic Care: What Does the Evidence Say?
Headaches are common, but not all headaches have the same cause. Some headaches may be influenced by the muscles and joints of the neck, particularly cervicogenic headaches, which originate from structures in the cervical spine.
Research suggests that chiropractic care and other forms of manual therapy may help some people with certain headache types. The evidence is strongest for cervicogenic headaches, where spinal manipulation may provide some improvments.
What Might Chiropractic Care Include?
Depending on your individual presentation, care may include:
- Spinal manipulation or mobilization
- Soft-tissue techniques
- Neck and upper-back exercises
- Postural and ergonomic recommendations
- Education about movement and lifestyle factors
The goal isn't simply to treat the headache itself. We look for musculoskeletal factors that may be contributing to your symptoms and determine whether conservative care is appropriate.
When Should You Seek Medical Care?
A sudden or unusually severe headache, or a headache accompanied by symptoms such as weakness, numbness, confusion, difficulty speaking, vision changes, seizure, fever, or significant head injury, requires medical evaluation.
If you experience recurring headaches, a proper evaluation can help determine what type of headache you're experiencing and whether chiropractic care may be an appropriate part of your overall care plan.
At Hebdon Chiropractic & Wellness, we take an evidence-informed approach to headache care—focusing on the individual rather than assuming every headache has the same cause.
