From the Desk of Dr. Hebdon:
A term I hear and see alot on my patients intakes is: Degenerative Disc Disease. I wanted to write this blog to give patients some insight as to what it actually is, and also so that you can understand that just becuase you have this diagnosis does not mean you will be in daily pain. Often when we are diagnosed with something we identify with it. But I challenge you to take this information and see past just the diagnosis. And as I say in clinic Degenerative Disc Disease really is just the "gray hair of the spine" for many of my patients.
Does Everyone Have Degenerative Disc Disease?
As we age, our bodies go through natural changes, and our spine is no exception. One of the most common age-related spinal changes is degenerative disc disease (DDD). But does everyone have it? And if so, why do some people experience pain while others don’t? Let’s take a closer look at this condition.
What Is Degenerative Disc Disease?
Despite its name, degenerative disc disease is not actually a disease—it’s a term used to describe the natural wear and tear of the spinal discs over time. These discs act as cushions between the vertebrae, providing flexibility and shock absorption. As we get older, our discs lose hydration, shrink, and may develop small tears, leading to reduced mobility and, in some cases, discomfort or pain.
Does Everyone Develop Degenerative Disc Disease?
Technically, yes—everyone experiences some level of disc degeneration as they age. However, not everyone will have symptoms or require treatment. Many people have signs of disc degeneration on an MRI but never develop pain or stiffness. Others may struggle with chronic back pain, radiating discomfort, or limited movement due to inflammation or nerve compression.
Risk Factors for Painful DDD
While aging is the primary factor, certain lifestyle and genetic factors can accelerate disc degeneration or increase the likelihood of painful symptoms:
- Genetics – A family history of spinal issues can make you more prone to symptoms.
- Poor Posture – Sitting for long hours or slouching can contribute to spinal stress.
- Smoking – Reduces blood flow to the spinal discs, speeding up degeneration.
- Obesity – Extra weight puts more pressure on the spine.
- Repetitive Movements & Heavy Lifting – Jobs or activities that strain the spine can cause earlier disc breakdown.
